Yankees ace Luis Severino helped the Yankees to a 5-3 win over the Astros by striking out 11 batters in seven innings.
Severino, who improved to 8-1 with a 2.31 ERA this season with the win, allowed just two runs off four hits. He now has double-digit strikeouts in three of his last six starts.
Pirates at Cardinals 7:15 p.m. ET — The surprising Pirates will send breakout candidate Trevor Williams (5-3, 3.43 ERA) to the mound to face off against Jack Flaherty (2-1, 2.15 ERA) and the Cardinals. The NL Central has been one of the deepest, most hotly-contested divisions in baseball so far, and the Cardinals are just starting to get healthy.
Davis told reporters Thursday he was disappointed in Palmer’s comments. Obviously, it bothers me, Davis said, per The Baltimore Sun. It’s disappointing that when things are obviously not going the way that I want for that to be called into question by two guys that I have a lot of trust, have a lot of faith in, that I’ve had a good relationship [with] for a number of years. (Davis and Coolbaugh were together in the Rangers’ system before reuniting in Baltimore.)
Coolbaugh told reporters his offseason one-on-one work with Davis was limited. I saw Chris three times, and I threw to him, and that was it, Coolbaugh said, per The Sun.
Palmer expanded on his comments Thursday during MASN’s O’s broadcast, and he didn’t back off at all.
He needs to make adjustments, and I’ll tell you what — Scott Coolbaugh, he had him in the minor leagues and said he was the last guy to leave the ballpark at night. I think he has to get back, Palmer said, per The Sun.
It just doesn’t happen at this level. It doesn’t matter how much money you’re making. It’s not about how much money, how long your contract is (Davis has four years remaining on a seven-year, $161 million pact). Are you doing the work to get better? I think that needs to improve. I stand by that. I think he does it and I hope he has success, because he’s a better player than he’s showed.
